the Temple of Fine Arts

The Spirit behind the Institution ...

'Enchanting strains - Krishna with Flute' The Temple of Fine Arts is an idea based on a simple dictum - serve, love, give.

It is an idea that has evolved into living palpable reality through an array of apparently disparate forms - a centre for the performing arts that seeks to refine above all else; a vegetarian restaurant that serves more than just delectable food; a travel agency and a computer outlet that places premium on service rather than profit; an art gallery that promotes art as a meditation of external reality and not just as a representation of it, and a free medical and dental clinic that heals by caring.

Touching the self in a way that goodness and decency invariably surface, it promotes sensitivity to ones environment; a sense of harmony with fellow man. It teaches the faith in oneself and the importance of shradha or right effort.

The result is a cooperative endeavour that allows one to give according to one's capacity and take according to one's needs. It fosters continuity and change in a way that's as bold as it is exciting. It moves away from the comfort of dogma by combining the traditional with the modern. And it does it with an abandon that can only come from fearlessness, faith and fortitude. It is an idea that works towards an ideal as it builds a future on the very best of the past.

The School - with the founding of the Temple of Fine Arts, something of dramatic proportions began to unfold ... for the first time within living memory there became available a spectrum of courses in the Indian cultural arts. Our Vision - necessity is the mother of invention. In our case it is equally the mother of progression. Since the inception of the Temple of Fine Arts in 1981 in KL Malaysia, the existing structures have been renoveated, demolished and reconfigured several times, each time using creative band aids. It became apparent by 1989 that a building proper had to be constructed, and planning proceeded in earnest. There have been many starts at fund raising, and many re-evaluations of the building designs taking into account the stark realities that charitable institutions such as ours, don't attract ready financial backers. Nonetheless we have persevered and expect the fruition of the impossible...
