Filigri
The first encounter with filigri art invariably produces a sense of awe in
most people. The intricacy to detail has a sureal dimension to it, that defies
the belief that such work could be the product of dexterous human handiwork.
Nonetheless it is product of human ingenuity and consumate artistic talent. Fine twisted silver wire is delicately laid to a preconceived zig zag pattern of loops. Adjacent loops are deftly soldered at specific locations to yield a trellis like structure that is endowed with a magical charm.
The inspiration for the underlying patterns are most often borrowed from nature. These could be leaves, flowers, trees, animals, and birds and other such objects. However, the versatility of the art is not restricted by tradition. The art has been extended from jewellery to other household articles like tea-trays, ornament containers, key chains and even cigarette boxes.
Standardisation is alien to the output of the silversmiths of Karimnagar who are the accredited creators of silver Filigree phenomenon. Like many other handicrafts, filigri retains a fascinating aspect the element of newness and surprise. Every piece looks different, delicate and unique.
